Union leader to run for NDP

Wednesday, February 24, 1999

TORONTO -- Sid Ryan, the fiery Ontario president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, is getting ready to take a run at provincial politics.

Mr. Ryan, 46, is planning to run as a New Democrat in the Toronto riding of Scarborough Centre in the next election. The riding was won by Progressive Conservative Dan Newman in 1995, but has since been enlarged to include neighbouring Scarborough-Ellesmere, which is held by another Tory, Marilyn Mushinski.

Mr. Ryan would take a leave of absence from his job for the month-long campaign. CP
